Welcome to issue twenty-nine of Nightmare!
In case you missed the news last month, just a reminder that we’re currently in the midst of crowdfunding our next big project. Last year, we asked women to destroy science fiction, and they did — spectacularly — in Lightspeed’s crowdfunded, all-women special issue, Women Destroy Science Fiction!. Never ones to rest on our laurels, we thought it best to continue with that fine tradition and engage in a little more destructive behavior. Thus, this year’s anniversary issue will be Queers Destroy Science Fiction!, guest edited by Seanan McGuire.
As we did with Women Destroy Science Fiction!, we’re conducting a Kickstarter campaign in support of Queers Destroy Science Fiction!. We were planning to publish the issue whether we reached our funding goal or not, but that turned out to not be a valid concern: We launched on January 15 and surpassed our original goal in about seven hours. Seven! Hours! As great as Women Destroy did last year, Queers Destroy is doing even better; fifteen days in, WDSF was at 455% funding, whereas QDSF is already at 588%! Thanks so much to all of you who have supported the project thus far!
Though we’ve reached our goal, we’ve still got several awesome stretch goals to unlock. We’ve already unlocked a number of them, including a Kickstarter-exclusive anthology sampler of queer stories (curated by me). And, as I write this shortly before this issue’s publication date, we’re right on the verge of unlocking our first big stretch goal: the Queers Destroy Horror! special issue of Nightmare. In fact we’re so close that by the time most of you read this, we probably will have unlocked it. But there are still others to unlock as well, including Queers Destroy Fantasy! and even Queers Destroy . . . Filk!
If you’ve already backed the Kickstarter, stay tuned: We’re going to be adding some additional reward options and add-on purchases to the campaign shortly.
The Queers Destroy Science Fiction! Kickstarter campaign began on January 15 and will conclude February 16. To learn more, visit destroysf.com/queers.

This month also sees the publication of my new anthology Wastelands 2, the sequel to my bestselling — and first! — anthology, Wastelands. It will be published by Titan Books on February 24 and contains nearly 200,000 words of fiction, including stories by George R.R. Martin, Seanan McGuire, Hugh Howey, Nancy Kress, David Brin, Ann Aguirre, Paolo Bacigalupi, Lauren Beukes, and Junot Díaz, among others. If you’d like to learn more about the book, read some of the stories for free online, or read interviews with the authors, visit my Wastelands 2 website at johnjosephadams.com/wastelands-2.
Speaking of Wastelands, Titan also just recently released the original Wastelands in mass market paperback edition. So if you’ve been wanting to read it all these years and just couldn’t abide paying more than $7.99 for it, now’s your chance!

With our announcements out of the way, here’s what we’ve got on tap this month:
We have original fiction from Karen Munro (“The Garden”) and Carmen Maria Machado (“Descent”), along with reprints by Halli Villegas (“Fishfly Season”) and Brian Evenson (“Cult”).
We also have the latest installment of our column on horror, “The H Word,” plus author spotlights with our authors, a showcase on our cover artist, and a feature interview with award-winning author Chuck Palahniuk.
That’s about all I have for you this month. Thanks for reading!
